Q: Who is BitArt?
A: I'm an artist. Code is my medium. My art has been exhibited internationally, including at The Whitney Museum in New York, The ICC in Tokyo and The ZKM in Karlsruhe.
Q: You created BitArt Programmable Computer and subsequently Of Ebb and Flow. Can you talk about that?
A: BitArt PC was an invitation to the Bitcoin ordinals community to create 8x8 pixel art inscriptions using a simple programming language. The code inscribed was then used as seed for OE&F and the generated artworks were airdropped to BitArt PC holders.
Q: How does Of Ebb and Flow use that code?
A: OE&F's algorithm changes BitArt PC's pixel art into gestural marks. The artwork then evolves in a tidal manner based on the block height. Each of the 310 unique OE&F pieces is by and of itself infinite, an artwork that can never be quite finished.
Q: You've described the medium for OE&F as Bitcoin Comgenerative. Can you explain?
A: Bitcoin Comgenerative art is a time-based form of generative art that takes input from the community, rather than a random seed, and communicates with the Bitcoin network. It is a reflection of Bitcoin's cultural logic.
Q: Why does this project need to be on Bitcoin? Could it have been launched elsewhere?
A: First of all, OE&F cannot be easily reproduced without changing the project in some way. The time-based aspect of OE&F follows the "can't step into the same river twice" principle. The same OE&F artwork inscribed at a different block height would look different. Secondly OE&F reacts to the state of Bitcoin and changes with it. Launching it on Ethereum or Solana, if at all possible, would yield very different results. It simply wouldn't be the same project anymore. The Bitcoin Comgenerative process provides context and thus meaning that is specific to Bitcoin.
Q: How do you see art on bitcoin evolving?
A: I'm excited about the surge of interesting art projects using the Bitcoin network itself as a medium. Adorable Flux and BitBlocks are two great recent examples. I believe that these types of explorations will lead to a new Bitcoin-native art form.
Q: You sign your art and messages with your public key, why?
A: It's the lore of provenance and the promise of continuity. Can artists live forever (assuming their keys can be passed on)?
Q: Why do you have no social media presence?
A: Social media algorithms tend to promote centralization. I see the role of an artist, especially in Bitcoin culture, as shifting from idiosyncratic to innominate.
Q: What's next?
A: I'll be listing several of my OE&F ordinals for sale on gamma.io: https://gamma.io/ordinals/collections/of-ebb-and-flow
More details soon.
Q: How do I contact you if I have more questions?
A: Inscribe a message on Bitcoin and address it To:BitArt
